The history of Maxion Structural Components can easily be confused with the history of the automotive and rail industry in Brazil. Maxion is an important part of the development of the two industrial segments. Check out our history in the timeline below.
The 40’s
The history of Maxion Structural Components began in 1943, when, in the Getúlio Vargas government, the FNV – Fábrica Nacional de Fábrica de Vagões (National Wagon Factory) was created, in order to strengthen the national industry. In 1945 the FNV was transferred to the city of Cruzeiro/SP, the first unit of the division.
The 50’s
In the late 1950s, under the leadership of Juscelino Kubitschek, Brazil began to invest heavily in the automobile industry, and the FNV was one of the first industries to be approved by the Executive Group of the Automobile Industry - GEIA to produce wheels for trucks and buses, becoming in 1960 the leader in this segment and responsible for 90% of the production of wheel rims for trucks and vehicles in Brazil.
The 60’s
In 1965, the machinery sector began to gain space in the FNV. Crawler tractors and backhoes were produced. One of the largest presses in the world was acquired in 1972. Imported from the United States, the Clearing press, with a capacity of 5,200 tons, was mainly intended for the manufacture of rails for heavy trucks. Currently, the Clearing press is the largest in the southern hemisphere.
The 80’s
The 1980s reaffirmed the excellence of the quality of FNV products. Due to having diversified production lines, the National Wagon Factory was renamed FNV – Vehicles and Equipment. The FNV name was maintained as an internationally known brand.
The 90’s
In 1990, the FNV was acquired by the Brazilian group Iochpe-Maxion. In 1994, we acquired Eluma Autopeças in Contagem/MG and 1995 started the pioneering project of Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus in Resende/RJ: the Modular Consortium. In 1998, due to the growing expansion, the companies were divided into Maxion – Foundry and Railway Equipment and another, operating in the Vehicle Parts and Road Implements sector, with the name of Maxion Structural Components.
The 2000’s
In 2000, Maxion started and implemented the Environmental Management System (SGA) and obtained ISO 14001 certification. In 2003, offering opportunities to all, the entry of women in the Light Press was registered, in Cruzeiro. In 2005, it was certified by BVQI (Bureau Veritas Quality International) at OHSAS 18001. In 2006 a milestone: the construction of a new warehouse in the Cruzeiro unit.
The 2010’s
In December 2010, Maxion started its new project in the Supplier Park of Volkswagen Caminhoes e Buses in Resende/RJ. Another milestone was in 2011, when we acquired 50% of the shares of Montich S.A., which was renamed Maxion Montich S.A. Soon after, in 2012, we completed the acquisition process of the Mexican group Galaz/Inmagusa and the American Hayes Lemmerz to reach new markets. Two new divisions were created: Maxion Structural Components and Maxion Wheels, starting a new phase of expansion of the group.
The 2020’s
Recently completing 100 years of history, Maxion has been actively working to consolidate its presence in the automotive market. There were numerous transformations that took place in the division of structural components, starting with the new global leadership structure, much more strategic, to significant changes in the plants. An example of this is the new Outsorcing project in partnership with Mercedes Benz; a new warehouse fully dedicated to the customer was built inside the Cruzeiro unit.
